“After reading this article, I couldn’t think of a better way to explain SEO”

-Editor

The fact is every search engine has a different formula to accord ranking for a Web page. Keyword-rich copy that the search engines favor may not ideally form the text -especially not on the front page! Using flash animation and of graphics may make the site appealing, but as the search engines can not index these well, one has to inevitably use gateway pages.

Some business owners may argue that their sites need to be one up on the others and would want liberal use of flash animation and lots of graphics, They may be somewhat disinclined to change this attitude just to satisfy the search engines.

There are many web developers who burn the midnight oil examining search engine results and trying to figure out each search engine’s methodology or algorithm for high rankings. As a matter of fact, there have been scores of software programs written over the years to unravel the algorithms to generate high-ranking pages for each engine. The problem is like a musical chair – by the time you arrive at a formula for an algorithm, the algorithm will change and the new algorithm must be cracked again. It is best this type of time-consuming method is avoided.

Notwithstanding the fact that search engines have slightly different algorithms which they keep changing, all search engines accord priority to the same set of things that real visitors look for in a Web site.

You do not need any technical expertise to know what parameters are needed for SEO. Sheer commonsense should suffice. What all search engines will uniformly expect in web pages are – an easy neatly coded design, an imaginative straightforward navigation, crisp yet well drafted copy, titles / meta tags that facilitate easy identification of relevant keyword and phrases and links that exactly describe what can be found at the site.

Writing Keyword-rich content does not necessarily mean one has to compromise on providing correct and appropriate information to the visitor. Good content can be written in a way that will fully drive home the benefits to the user while suitably utilizing keyword phrases. It may be seemingly difficult but possible by a competent content writer. The advice is to engage a professional content writer and not somebody obsessed with SEO.

It is once again an act born of common sense. Web with skillfully written keyword rich content have the potential to achieve high rankings for many years regardless of search engines changing algorithms. Still more importantly, they will also be a runaway success with the site visitors.

Most web developers are excessively fond of flash animation and graphics and willing to even forego appropriate content. Clients who want high rankings and lots of traffic also refuse to forfeit the avoidable graphics and flash animation. Now, it is to an extent true that some search engines have started reading the content of flash files.

A flash presentation on a site may appear exciting the first couple of times one views it, but thereafter it will be irksome when the visitor is not able to get the precise information he or she wants. And Why not have your cake and eat it too? – By using permissible amounts of flash in select places along with justifiable content. At the end of the day, most people are looking for exact information on the types of products or services in concise language, preferably on the main page of the site. Let us not forget that is exactly what the search engines also want to provide higher rankings.

The heartening fact is, as the Web matures, more and more business site owners are realizing that their fanciful sites do not fetch much traffic as the competitor’s site that provides strictly business information bereft of all ostentation. Thus there is the new trend of creating a couple of additional sites purely for SEO purposes.

It is said, and rightly too, that the single most important part of optimizing a site and getting it rank well in the search engines is content. Write a new page of content for your site at regular intervals and your website will climb the ranks. With irrelevant or inadequate content, the website will soon become a disaster whatever its other merits.

Of course, content need not be mistaken for pages of mere text. It may include a shopping cart filled with products and product descriptions as also downloadable gadgets and gimmicks. There are some imaginative developers who add jokes, anecdotes, and stories of success associated with their products. As long the written material is relevant to one’s business, website can legitimately aspire for better rankings.

Guided by commonsense, let us take following steps for higher rankings by search engines:

Provide simple straightforward and easily comprehensible information.

* Avoid too many technical jargons as it is not the place to display one’s expertise but to remain user-friendly.

* Try not to employ some clever tricks. Search engines are any day smarter than you. The whole effort will prove counter-productive as the search engines may even penalize you for these antics.

Make the URL for the site clear and relevant and acceptable to crawlers

Put yourself into the shoes of a random visitor and ask the question – is this page well-structured and offers me right and adequate information about what I am seeking?

* Reliability of information is of paramount importance. You will have an easier time ranking highly if your site offers established and trustworthy information ant the content is devoid of too many hollow superlatives.

There is no denying that it takes time to achieve SEO. Much of SEO is based on other sites that link back to your page, but then you have no direct control over that aspect. All you can do is to focus on what you have control over, which is making your page as compelling as possible.

While there are dozens of SEO techniques and strategies, some the most effective are the simplest. Instead of spreading your resources too thin with a myriad to strategies to rank highly in the search engines. I recommend focusing on just six that have proven to be effective. They are each explained below:

Blog Reviews
These include a direct link and short review from only experienced and established bloggers. Typically they can be purchased for $5-$10 from sites like PayPerPost. Because these are direct links from trusted sources, they are extremely effective at getting you to the top of the search results.

Article Marketing
One of my favorite seo techniques is article marketing. Although it takes hard work, writing quality articles on your topic and submitting them to article directories will give you relevant backlinks from quality websites.

Directory Submissions
Website directories give your site a quick description and a link back to your site. This is a proven way to build a many backlinks in a short period of time. They won’t preform miracles, but directories can help a great deal when combined with other seo techniques.

Social Bookmarks
This includes submitting the pages of your site to social bookmarking portals, such as Digg, Redditt, Del.icio.us, and dozens of others. This is a great way to build backlinks from some of the biggest websites online. As an added bonus in addition to the seo benefits, these sites can even provide some direct traffic.

Squidoo Lenses
Squidoo is a website that allows users to make a “lens” (or, a page) about any topic they desire. This site also allows direct links back to your site, and using this service can be one of the most beneficial link building strategies. Be sure to include at least one Squidoo lens in your set of SEO Techniques.

Press Releases
Finally, creating a press release with your links in the text and then submitting this release across many press release portals is a fantastic way to build backlinks. And, if your story is quality, it may get picked up and distributed even further; providing links from major news portals.

These techniques are down to earth and proven to deliver results time and time again. Start implementing one or two each week until you’ve incorporated them all!

The main coding standard is set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and their validator can help you determine if there are any errors in your code that need to be fixed. They will also detail what the exact errors are so you or your developers can get them fixed straight away.

W3C was started up 10 years ago by the inventor of the WWW Tim Berners-Lee and he still maintains his role in the consortium to oversee the new standards that are set for the latest coding languages.

If you are clearing your website to meet W3C standards you should ensure to select the correct level as appropriate to your website, otherwise you may need that errors do not match and cannot be fixed depending on how the code was written. Most websites will have a document header at the top of the code to tell the search engines which level you have cleared to so that they know in what language the Google Bot should then read the code in without coming across unnecessary errors.

WAI validation is another well known coding standard used by SEO companies to ensure that the site meets accessibility standards which are developed for internet users with disabilities. Usually you only need to clear your website to the first level of WAI compliancy which is required so that users can listen to what is written within an image alt tag if they cannot see the image itself. This is quite simple to do and is enough for most websites targeting the general public.

This is a quick post just to point some thoughts on why I think that businesses large, medium and small should start taking Social Media Marketing very seriously.

If you are one of those hundreds of thousands of companies that are suffering daily to make a simple sale on something that you know has value, is priced right and is something that a customer/consumer can and will use then you need to ask yourself why you haven’t yet taken into consideration the power of social media marketing.

This post is inspired by a TV advert. I am a web addict and love web design, development, search engine optimization and social media marketing so it is very rare that you will catch me in front of the TV. Yet here I was, eyes glued to the TV set, jaw dropped to the ground and in AB-SO-LUTE awe! I will not mention any brand names but what I saw was a cellphone being marketed as a Social Media Networking tool. Yes. Thats right. Yahoo!, Fliker, YouTube, Facebook were all mentioned. One can come to the conclusion that if cell phone companies are marketing like so, then there is a demand for it. More people will purchase cell phones for neworking which will result in more people using PC’s to access social networks. This only means that now all businesses small and large can benefit from creating more branding, marketing and awareness about their products.

Consider that before you go saying that your company does not or will not need Social Media to market your business. Once the initial costs are over and your company has built a grounding for social media networking you can be sure that more people will recommend you as a trustworhy source for a specific service or product.

Here’s the bottom line, your competitors already have the edge against you. How much longer will it be before you realise the importance that this plays in the ever increasing world wide web and the impact that it has on people all over the world, people that are ultimately YOUR customers.

Do not let your competitiors get the edge our you – use Social Media Marketing NOW!

At the heart of successful SEO is determining what keyword or keywords to use when optimizing a website. The prevalence of a specific word or phrase on a webpage is critical to influencing SERP (Search Engine Result pages) ranking. In most cases websites should be optimized for multiple keywords, and a simple way to do this is to optimize different sections or pages with different keywords.

Of course, there are exceptions to this approach.Below are some basic questions to ask when considering keywords to focus on. Once a keyword(s) is selected it should serve as the focus of a site’s SEO efforts.

1. Does anyone search for the word on search engines?

If the site is about an eating establishment, what words would people use to search for the site? Restaurant, café, diner… Does anyone use the word “eatery”?

2. Which words does the site’s target audience use?

Regional diction complicates keyword selection if a site is aimed at a large geographical area. For example, a housing site for the English-speaking world can use “apartment” and do well in the United States, but it wouldn’t do as well in other countries like the United Kingdom where “flat” is much more commonplace.

One must consider more than just geography when selecting a keyword. There are many factors that influence how an audience might search for a website. If the target audience of a website about a specific chemical consists of people with a science background, it would be best to focus SEO on scientific keywords that this audience is likely to use. A different website may be marketing a medical drug made up of the exact same chemical. In this case the target audience would be the general public, and it is unlikely that this audience will use scientific words or phrases when using a search engine to learn about the pharmaceutical.

3. How competitive is it to rank well with a specific keyword?

Ranking well on results pages for “restaurant” is very tough, since there are millions of sites for restaurants. While other words like “diner”, “café”, and “eatery” are still very common on websites, they are far less common than the word “restaurant.” It is therefore easier to influence the search engine rank of a restaurant website using these less-common words instead. Due to the difficulty of ranking high in search engine results for an extremely competitive keyword such as “restaurant”, SEO professionals will usually focus on more specific words or phrases. For instance, a local pizza restaurant does not want or need to appear in search engine results for everyone around the world who searches for the term “pizzeria”. If the local pizza restaurant is in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC, it would make a lot more sense to focus SEO efforts on phrases such as “Washington DC pizzeria” or “Georgetown pizzeria.”

4. How does one find out words that are commonly used by a specific audience?

There are several ways to answer this question. For highly specialized sites, the SEO professional’s clients are often the best resource since they will know best what words are used in their specialized field. One useful tool is Google Suggest. Google Suggest lists the number of results that the search engine presents for a specific keyword. This can be helpful in determining the relative popularity of different keywords one thinks the target audience may use to find one’s site. Other tools include keyword selector tools that will read the pages on a website and suggest keywords to the SEO professional based on their prevalence and the presence of synonyms on the site’s other pages.

A website’s traffic analytics program is a great resource for revealing what keywords people already use in search engines to locate one’s website.

In essence Google saw blasted all over every Search Engine Optimization Blog world a new fad called link building; and that people were exchanging links left and right, which in all reality was creating illegitimate links (because there was no genuine interest in the web site thru this link to begin with). So I can only (once more) assume they talked to one another and said, “We should give very little value to links where web sites exchanged links in both directions”.

Then another issue that had to arise during this algorithm change was Google needed to make sure they could not be thwarted by all SEO gurus, and they did something else to help perpetuate that. In order for your hundreds of links you obtain to be most effective, your links must have unique hypertext or surrounding text to have high quality value. For example, if someone had the exact same link to their web site posted on 1,000 web sites saying “click here for quality dog food”; This would easily alert Google that this site does not have actual quality inbound links, and that someone either manually or automatically posted the same link to every related site they could find. Common sense of most every webmaster would tell them to post the a link over and over to as many place related web sites, but many didn’t consider the need for unique hypertext and descriptions to the web site. Therefore; once again, I can assume that Google decided the more unique the hypertext wording; the higher the chance that the link is authentic.

Another issue that arises is that many webmasters will create a web site that does not have any content change at all. You can have tons of great links, but I am positive that Google admires sites with fresh content. You need to update your site every few months (at least) and tweak some things regularly; you should also always add new fresh content.

Others have also realized that Google does value web sites that have been on the internet for extended periods of time. So if you are starting a new web site you need to be able to trench down for a long fight, however the rewards are great to the person that doesn’t falter and is persistent until the end.

Google isn’t prejudice, if you had as many unique links to your web site as yahoo.com Google would value you as an equal resource. Know that you are just another search optimizer against hundreds of thousands of others. How will you set yourself apart?

So to recap, Google decided that they needed to make sure that your web site is legitimately linked to. Unfortunately there are only a few ways to do that, and guarantee it withstands the tests of time. Here are some of my own personal ideas:

It comes down to the simple fact that now days in order to make sure you secure a long lasting high search engine ranking, you have to actually create content that markets itself. Also you must create enough interest in your web site that people are willing to take enough time to link to you without expecting a link back. All that said, here are my ideas that will help you to gain long lasting valuable links to your web site which will help make sure your long term search optimization goals are worth while.

Let’s start by getting our web site listed in to directories related to your topic; however don’t use the same title and description for each posting – constantly switch it up. Something I do personally in my spare time to help my site is go on other peoples blog’s talking about a subject that your web site is similar to and write genuine posts with your link attached. Don’t just flood their web site with links, you won’t get far and your posts will not be accepted. Publishing of articles online is great; be creative – that is what will set you apart. You can also host or sponsor events that will be talked about online. Offer incentives for people in your field to link to you, freebies, services, etc.

I tell you the absolute truth, whoever has a good work ethic and more creative bone in their body will succeed. This is because you will always have to find ways to create a constant flow of links to your web site without trying to manipulate a search engines perspective. Hard work is the easiest way to beat everyone else. Here is a quote I love from an unknown author: Some People Dream Of Success While Others Wake Up And Work Hard At It.

Most businesses don’t want an SEO guarantee about end results; they aren’t that naïve. What they are really asking for is credibility, experience and ethical business practices – the ingredients of a trust relationship.

Most SEO professionals do not provide guarantees about rankings or end results for good reason: no one controls Google’s algo but Google. What search marketing pros can guarantee is a plan and implementation that has proven to bring good rankings in the past. In addition, SEO professionals should be able to guarantee:

§ Indexing of a site’s pages
§ Targeting appropriate search terms
§ Producing a content development plan
§ Programming web analytics to track results
§ Developing a link-building strategy
§ Setting realistic rank expectations and timeframe based on experience

But how can SEO providers better handle those businesses who ask for a guarantee?
Businesses want reasonable ROI from their investment; if they cannot picture a successful end result while conversing with a provider, there’s going to be a lack of confidence in your ability to produce results.

Two Scenarios:

Many businesses know SEO, but they don’t have the time to execute an SEO plan. What they are most concerned about boils down to:

1. Confidence in your ability to deliver results
2. Fear of choosing the wrong provider, which could mean loss of investment, lost time, lost opportunity, or even loss of their position or job.

Some businesses don’t know SEO and may have been burned before by someone who did guarantee results. They may need lots of basic education about SEO. These businesses are most concerned about:

1. Confidence in your ability to deliver results
2. Fear of choosing the wrong provider, which could mean loss of investment, lost time, lost opportunity, or loss of their position or job.

Beginning to get the picture?

So how can SEO providers increase a prospect’s confidence in their ability and calm fears of negative consequences (which has far more value than an “SEO guarantee”)?

1. Join an organization known for keeping members who are above-board, like SEMPO.
2. Provide clear case studies outlining before and after results, and what you did to overcome the ranking barriers. The more detailed the ROI data, the better your prospect can see their own business fitting in with yours.
3. Effective listening is the bottom line of trust. Ask good questions about expectations rather than offering unsolicited answers. One of my favorite questions is “What makes SEO a priority for you now?”
4. Investigate the concerns and fears of the prospect. Empathy is the currency of trust, giving insight into what others may be thinking or feeling. Empathy helps us understand why others are reacting to situations and it allows us to create bonds of trust. Learn who else is involved in the decision and arrange to talk with each of them.
5. Understand the risk control mechanism that’s in place. Most organizations have procurement or vetting processes. These buyers are motivated by financial risk, my position risk and personal credibility, among other factors. According to Enquiro’s Mapping The BuyerSphere study, some of the ways organizations control risk include:

§ Tapping past experience and approved vendors
§ Word of mouth and the experience of others
§ Asking existing (trusted) vendors
§ Credibility of vendors (bigger is better, the vendor who does business with lots of big companies)
§ Check out what they find online to make sure the right messaging is out there to deal with these risks
§ Price

Trust has been defined as “the willingness of a party (trustor) to be vulnerable to the actions of another party (trustee) based on the expectation that the trustee will perform an action important to the trustor, regardless of the trustor’s ability to monitor or control the trustee.” Trust is the expectation that people can rely on your word. It is built through integrity and consistency in relationships.

Building trust is the key to an “SEO guarantee” that fosters confidence in your ability and calms fears of negative consequences.

Let me suggest that the focus of SEO should be audience engagement, rather than traffic. According to Eric T. Peterson of Web Analytics Demystified, “Engagement is an estimate of the depth of visitor interaction against a clearly defined set of goals.” That’s pretty clear: Without specific goals, driving more traffic to your website sounds like a good option.

But if a visitor hits your site and bounces, your depth of visitor interaction is null. To truly engage a visitor requires relevance and targeted communication. So what is best for your business? I offer a different approach: using SEO to build audience engagement.

Steps to audience engagement via SEO:
1. Define the business goal/s “Getting on the first page of Google” or “Getting more traffic” are usually not much more than the hopes of individuals who have not defined strategic business goals. Instead, a targeted goal might be, “To generate quality leads from the website that result in 20% of annual business.”

2. Prioritize keywords according to relevant intent, rather than potential traffic volume It’s always interesting to see keyword research sorted to show the most popular to the least popular search terms. But could the real valuable search terms be those that are less popular, but rich with intent?

Most searchers can be divided into one of two camps: the researcher (who doesn’t yet know what he wants) and the purchaser (who has already done the research and knows exactly what she wants).

In some cases it makes sense to target both groups; you can sometimes see the intent with the search phrase. Now with your short list of researcher and purchaser search terms, can you confidently say that 90% of these searchers, if they clicked through to your site, would find something relevant, useful and of value? If you can’t, then your keyword is probably not rich with intent.

3. Prepare content that speaks directly to each motivation behind the searcher’s intent Researchers want product/service info, comparisons, evaluation criteria and RFP info. Purchasers want the best corporate fit, customer service, implementation and procurement info.

Let’s consider a sales training business as an example. Their most desired keyword is sales training, but it’s easy to see that the search term sales training is general, not descriptive. A person using that phrase is really not in purchase mode at the moment. The researcher’s motivation (sometimes known as “tire kickers”) is probably to get free tips, to compare sales training services and specifics so she can learn something and perhaps make a decision later.

Now consider a more descriptive keyword for this business: sales training consultant. Can you see the motivation behind this search? SEO providers with a “get more traffic” mentality side-step this issue. But to achieve audience engagement, you need guidance in the motivations behind the keywords you select. This drives content development that fits your audience and your site, as well as avoiding awkward or confusing phrasing.

4. Define the unique value proposition (UVP) Businesses that have invested in uncovering this piece of the puzzle are light-years ahead of their competition in all aspects of marketing. When it comes to SEO, the UVP has to be interpreted and applied to the searcher’s intent. It’s not necessary for an SEO consultant to understand the principles of semantics, but the right interpretation of the UVP can go a long way to achieving audience engagement.

5. Deliver on (and exceed) the UVP to create loyalty Do what you say you will do. Deliver on the promises you make. Do what is right from your new customer’s perspective, and go beyond their expectations to forge a lasting relationship. These are common sense, good business practices that bring future rewards.

“But,” you ask, “what does that have to do with SEO?” Everything, if you want long-term customer loyalty rather than more, sort-of-qualified traffic. Loyalty is a measurable metric and often comes with SEO rewards like fabulous testimonials and links from customer sites.

At the end of the day, businesses want SEO consultants who tailor their Internet marketing directly to the bottom line by bringing valuable traffic from multiple sources, optimized conversion rates and returning customers – rather than simply getting more traffic to the site.
