At the heart of successful SEO is determining what keyword or keywords to use when optimizing a website. The prevalence of a specific word or phrase on a webpage is critical to influencing SERP (Search Engine Result pages) ranking. In most cases websites should be optimized for multiple keywords, and a simple way to do this is to optimize different sections or pages with different keywords.

Of course, there are exceptions to this approach.Below are some basic questions to ask when considering keywords to focus on. Once a keyword(s) is selected it should serve as the focus of a site’s SEO efforts.

1. Does anyone search for the word on search engines?

If the site is about an eating establishment, what words would people use to search for the site? Restaurant, café, diner… Does anyone use the word “eatery”?

2. Which words does the site’s target audience use?

Regional diction complicates keyword selection if a site is aimed at a large geographical area. For example, a housing site for the English-speaking world can use “apartment” and do well in the United States, but it wouldn’t do as well in other countries like the United Kingdom where “flat” is much more commonplace.

One must consider more than just geography when selecting a keyword. There are many factors that influence how an audience might search for a website. If the target audience of a website about a specific chemical consists of people with a science background, it would be best to focus SEO on scientific keywords that this audience is likely to use. A different website may be marketing a medical drug made up of the exact same chemical. In this case the target audience would be the general public, and it is unlikely that this audience will use scientific words or phrases when using a search engine to learn about the pharmaceutical.

3. How competitive is it to rank well with a specific keyword?

Ranking well on results pages for “restaurant” is very tough, since there are millions of sites for restaurants. While other words like “diner”, “café”, and “eatery” are still very common on websites, they are far less common than the word “restaurant.” It is therefore easier to influence the search engine rank of a restaurant website using these less-common words instead. Due to the difficulty of ranking high in search engine results for an extremely competitive keyword such as “restaurant”, SEO professionals will usually focus on more specific words or phrases. For instance, a local pizza restaurant does not want or need to appear in search engine results for everyone around the world who searches for the term “pizzeria”. If the local pizza restaurant is in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC, it would make a lot more sense to focus SEO efforts on phrases such as “Washington DC pizzeria” or “Georgetown pizzeria.”

4. How does one find out words that are commonly used by a specific audience?

There are several ways to answer this question. For highly specialized sites, the SEO professional’s clients are often the best resource since they will know best what words are used in their specialized field. One useful tool is Google Suggest. Google Suggest lists the number of results that the search engine presents for a specific keyword. This can be helpful in determining the relative popularity of different keywords one thinks the target audience may use to find one’s site. Other tools include keyword selector tools that will read the pages on a website and suggest keywords to the SEO professional based on their prevalence and the presence of synonyms on the site’s other pages.

A website’s traffic analytics program is a great resource for revealing what keywords people already use in search engines to locate one’s website.

As many already know, keyword research is a vitally important part of a website’s viability and long-term success. At least, where search engines are concerned. While keyword research itself is important — just as important, if not more important, is knowing how to extract the right information while you’re researching a particular keyword or a keyword market. While you can know the importance of keyword research, and then act upon that knowledge, it is possible to use the keyword research data improperly, and actually end up hurting yourself, and your website.

Separating truth from fiction

For any keyword research tool that relies on real-time, or compiled, search queries, there is a real possibility that auto-generated queries are going to show up in those results. These “auto-generated queries” can skew the results of your keyword research, and may potentially give you false information. Now, these false positives, or even false results, won’t affect savvy keyword researchers, but they could hurt the new-to-the-game keyword researcher.

We don’t mean to alarm you here, though. Any such abnormalities, or “skewed results” generally present themselves as obscure, long-tail keywords anyway, but it’s important to know that just because a keyword research tool gives you some data, this doesn’t inherently mean that it’s accurate and that you should act on it.

Know what keyword research really is

One of the most basic misunderstandings of what keyword research is sometimes causes the most damage for website owners who perform their own keyword research services. Most keyword research tools offer a relative gauge of the search marketing landscape — keyword research results are not typically meant to be absolutes.

For many keyword tools, particularly the free keyword tools that are available online, they are meant to be used as comparison tools. By viewing keyword research this way, as a type of comparison tool, you will have a more accurate view of your keyword market, and it can help you to identify the best approach for your SEO and marketing campaigns. In other words, comparison keyword research is much more powerful, and accurate, than relying on the estimated search volume of a particular keyword alone.

Know the difference between “information” keywords and “buying” keywords

If you’re running a for-profit website, one of the most important aspects of your keyword research is that you work to target keywords that will bring in buyers, not just browsers. Sure, people looking for information sometimes will buy, but the foundation of your website’s search engine optimization and marketing keywords should be built to attract buyers.

If your website’s on-page optimization, and off-page marketing strategies, focus on “information-sharing” keywords and phrases, that is going to affect your conversions and overall profitability. While it’s important to incorporate excellent information on your website, and thus may necessitate a measure of information-focused keyphrases, just know that if you aspire to make money with your website, your keyword list should reflect this.

While keyword research is a necessary part of maintaining a successful website today, and many website owners would benefit from learning how to perform keyword research themselves, it’s important that you perform your keyword research properly. If you’re new to the game, you might want to consider hiring a keyword research service to help you out initially, so that you can see how it’s done, and you can hopefully pick up a few cues so that you avoid the dangers of improper keyword research yourself.

Often, a website will survive and thrive based on the quality of its design. This is because a well designed website will help deliver the intended purpose of the site. In other words, if the site’s goal is to sell health products, a properly designed site will have a greater chance at delivering this goal than a site that is poorly composed. As such, it is important to look at 7 elements that can greatly enhance the design of a website.

7 Necessary Elements

Never skimp on your webhosting. Now, some may wonder what a hosting service has to do with the design of a website. Actually, there are many things that tie the two together. For example, if the bandwidth on the site is low, how can it maintain a design that integrates multimedia displays? No, it is never a good idea to overlook the benefits of solid website hosting services.

Always be sure your website content and the URL are rich in keywords. If a website is not properly indexed and ranked in the search engines, the success of the site will be doubtful. That is why integrating the proper keywords into the design of the site will be of paramount importance.

Be sure to optimize every page on the website. Yes, the homepage is of critical importance but it is not enough to have a well optimized homepage. Every page on the site needs to be properly optimized. This is because every page will be indexed in the search engines and each and every one of these pages will be needed for successful SEO strategies.

Keep the concept of keyword optimization in mind when you craft the titles of the web pages. In short, you will want to use helpful keywords that the search engine robots will smile upon when you design the titles. Once again, it is important to never let a good SEO opportunity go to waste when you are crafting the individual page titles.

Adding and index and a site map to the design of the page is helpful. This way, the entirety of the website will be indexed by the search engine robots in a much friendlier and easier manner. Remember, the key is to make sure the totality of your website’s design aids in its search engine optimization.

Always keep the content of your site updated and current. When you start to fall behind on keeping content current, it will lose standing in the eyes of the search engine robots. Really, how relevant can a website be if it is never updated? Yes, keeping content fresh and updated is critical to SEO success.

Do not overuse graphics. Illustrations, pictures, and media files are all helpful. However, they will not help a website very much in terms of SEO rankings. That is why it is often best to keep these items to a minimum when SEO design is your main concern. This does not mean your pages should be bare. It simply means the illustrations should not come at the sacrifice of content and keywords.
