I want to share a few methods of how I ‘made it’ online and hopefully this will inspire some of you to do the same.

Generate Income Online

The web is a giant place. There are billions of web pages and these are increasing everyday. Everyone wants a piece of online shares. So how to you keep abreast of the ‘heat’ if you decide to make money online. Well, you try finding your niche. There are hundreds of tools that will help you to find your niche and most of them come with a great big price to match their so called ‘expertise’. Mostly what I find is that these software programs just pull information from Search Engines like Google. So why not just go to the source? The key word tool on Google helps you to find out just how many searches are performed on keywords that you may be interested in. However bear in mind that sometimes these numbers are exaggerated. You can look for anything from keywords to key phrases to see just how these would word in any niche that you select. You can take these keywords and paste them into your blogs or your websites and start optimizing for those only. You will find that if your have great content you will also have an enormous amount of traffic passing through your site.

Marketing

I find online marketing to be a lot of fun mainly because of the ability to determine results down to the smallest factor. It takes a great deal of effort to set up, but once you have that put of the way you are pretty much set to analysing and processing all the information that you will need. You would find tons of guides online to help you determine which analytics service you should use. I personally recommend Google Analytics; however, there are many others to choose from.
I use blogging software namely WordPress as a CMS or a targeted blog to add that extra edge to my online efforts. Here are a few sites that I use to market my information:

• Email and RSS feeds
• Facebook
• LinkedIn
• Freindfeed
• Technorati
• Mixx
• Digg
You can choose as many as you like and even find more online that could help you to get a wider audience and maybe even an audience that is more targeted. Depending on your type of service and/or product you might choose to market only to a specific area and/or country. For this type of marketing I make use of the Google, MSN and Yahoo! Webmaster tools to ensure that all of my search results are targeted towards the place that it is intended for. This way you may even get better Search Engine Results Positioning and would ultimately help to increase your sales per visit.

Remember that your content and site should be optimized for your visitors and not the search engines. This can help you realize the potential of your site and ensure that you create a memorable presence online. Also, you should keep your web site visitors by offering them a quick, concise and friendly way of signing up to email notifications of new content or offers that you may have.

I have been there and done it all! I don’t even want to count the hours that I’ve spent for registering with the different article websites or emailing webmasters. I’ve always tried to figure out a way to get indexed in the search engines as soon as possible and to get a good page rank in no time. Then, one day, I finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel: Directory submissions. Now please don’t immediately think of those free for all (FFA) links pages that will place your link on the Front Page for like 5 minutes or so. I mean well established link directories, websites that are really effective for getting your site indexed fast.

The good thing with link directories is that you practically have to do nothing but submit your website link, a title, short description and some keywords. Of course you also have to select a category under which your website should be filed, but even that is no problem at all as most link directories have a comprehensive list of categories available. When you have submitted your website it will most of the time be reviewed by a human editor. This might sound like a bottleneck at first, but when you think about all those crappy websites that don’t get listed because of the spam techniques they use, (remember those FFA link pages) it is absolutely an advantage!

Getting your site listed at link directories can be extremely easy if you follow some simple rules.

When build your website make sure that it doesn’t look like it was put together in 30 minutes or like it was made by a 5 year old. It’s really the quality that counts and that gets you eventually listed. If you now think: “Oh no, I have no chance to even get a single listing!”, then let me tell you that you shouldn’t worry so much. An easy way to find out what requirements your site has to fulfill to get listed is to browse through some of the directory listings and have a look at the websites that are already included. You might laugh out loud when you see some of them – not because they look crappy (OK, some even might), but because they are kept pretty simple and clean. I guarantee you that if you are serious about website building and use a good software and/or design you should not have to worry at all. Of course it is always a must to read the directory guidelines to see whether your site qualifies for a listing or not (e. g. there’s no suitable category available).

Some link directories might require to put a link back to them on your site, a so called reciprocal link. It could either be a simple link, some more advanced HTML stuff (don’t worry, you can copy & paste the code almost all of the time) or graphics. The benefit the link directories get from that is that when your website finally gets some good traffic and has high search engine listings some of your visitors might find their way to the link directory itself. Also it will give the link directories some page rank when your site has lots of back links (and you WILL get them by submitting to link directories). Make sure to put up those reciprocal links before you submit to the directories as some of them might instantly check for it and possibly reject your site.

If you follow these guidelines and make sure that you have some good and search engine optimized content on your website (not just dozens of pages of keywords and spam), then you will have no problems at all in getting listed with the link directories, getting picked up by the search engines and profiting from the floods of traffic. I personally do directory submissions almost daily and most of the time manage to get picked up by the link directories at the first try (sometimes I do some stupid mistakes by submitting a website and having misspelled the title or URL because of too much caffeine in my blood). As far as the traffic results are concerned I am more than satisfied. Lots and lots of my websites have TOP 10 listings in all of the search engines and have brought me significant traffic and product sales.

The best thing of all is that you don’t even have to manually search for those link directories by yourself. I use a software called Link Directory Submitter that does most of the work for me. I should be ashamed for my laziness, but I’d rather prefer to spend more hours lying in the sun and drinking Margaritas than submitting links for hours. To be honest, with automated software like Link Directory Submitter I could submit an army of websites in no time but hey, I’d also have to build them. Now that’s a vicious circle!

Of course, it just wasn’t true. You still needed to optimize the pages. After all, if your page was about ultralight backpacking, how would the search engines know that if you didn’t use the phrase a few times on the page? And if you preferred to call it “fastpacking,” there was never a way for all those searchers of “ultralight backpacking” to find your page – even if it was exactly the content they wanted.

So optimization still matters. But when the search engine algorithms changed again they began to place less emphasis on “on site” optimization. You still need those keywords on the page, but this is no longer enough. You also need to have other sites linking to yours, to show that you are important. Links have become very important if you want more website traffic from search engines.

The type of link matters though. Reciprocal links – where you trade with another site – are no longer of much value. Search engine algorithms have been adjusted for the fact that sites started trading irrelevant links just to boost rankings. Only one-way unpaid links are considered a true “vote of confidence” by the search engines, and so these are what you need.

Now, some experts still claim that you get links by having great content. People read your page, like it and so link to it. That would be nice, but it isn’t common at all. In fact, there are several things wrong with this theory.

First, how do the readers find your page to begin with, so they can then decide they like it enough to link to it? If you have no incoming links, the search engines ignore you, so how does anyone find the page? Secondly, if some visitors do make their way to your pages, will they have websites to link to you from? Most internet users either don’t have a website or they barely know how to create a link.

Finally, serious webmasters are hesitant to link to other sites too often now. Why? They don’t want to link to possible competition for starters. But the bigger reason is that a given page can only has just so much “voting power” according to search engine algorithms, so owners of sites like to divide it up in beneficial ways – like by linking to their own pages and sites.

So getting incoming links is the way to get more website traffic, but they are hard to get. What can you do? You can pay for traffic, but with many sites this is impractical. If your site makes ten cents per visitor and you pay fifty cents to get one, you are just throwing your money away.

Now, before I answer the question of how to get more traffic, let me add an encouraging note. Contrary to what some are saying, good content is not irrelevant now. Don’t listen to the skeptics. I recently read an opinion piece by a webmaster who said the old idea of “building a great website with great content” in order to get traffic was “foolish nonsense.” It isn’t.

What do we want when we search for things online? We want great websites with great content, right? That is exactly what the search engines are trying to point us too. The fact that they don’t do it perfectly doesn’t mean they aren’t getting better at it. So as they get continue to improve, you want to have the kind of site that they are looking for. If you’re thinking long term, have good content.

Finally, one of the best ways I have found to generate more website traffic is with simple articles like this one. Submit it to a few article directories, and you’ll get some readers. If they like it, some will even take it and use it on their websites, creating valuable one-way links. That helps with your search engine rankings. Meanwhile, some readers will like it enough to want more, and they’ll click that link in your resource or “about the author” box at the end of the article.

Google Analytics

There’s no need to hire a programmer–some of my favorite reports are quick and easy to create using Google Analytics.

Create a Market Segment

If you’re a company that caters to local or regional clients, you may want to create an Advanced Segment first. This will allow you to view any reports–including custom designed ones–as they really apply to your target market.

Under Advanced Segments, create a new custom segment. For this example, we’re going to create a segment for the territory of Harrisburg, Lancaster, and York, Pennsylvania.

Select Visitors, then slide the “City” dimension over to the report form. For “Condition” select “Matches Exactly”, then type “Harrisburg”. Continue this process for Lancaster and York, ensuring that you Add “or” Statement between each.

Then, because some of these cities exist in other states, I will Add “and” Statement and slide over the Region dimension and “Match Exactly” to “Pennsylvania”.

The last step is to name your segment. In this case, I’m calling it “York-Harrisburg-Lancaster-PA”. Then click on “Test Segment” to view the results. You now have the capability of viewing that market segment in any report–custom or canned. Now let’s monitor your traffic building progress.

Monthly Organic Progress Report

Organic search results are unpaid traffic that is sent to your website from the search results. To easily view your monthly organic search results, click on “Custom Reporting”, then “Create New Custom Report”. You’ll notice the same format you used when you created your market segment.

Start with the metrics–slide over the metrics for Visits, Time on Site, Pages per Visit, Bounces and Bounce Rate. Most of these metrics are self-explanatory except for the Bounce Rate. The Bounce Rate is important–it’s the percentage of visits that immediately click off your site. It’s a great indication that either the wrong traffic is being sent to your site, wrong keyword usage, or the site needs some work.

Now, under the Dimensions section, select “Medium” and slide it over to your report. Medium is the breakdown of organic, referrals, or direct visits to your website. As a Sub-Dimension, slide over “Month”, then “Keyword” below that.

Be sure to edit the name to something you’ll better recognize. In this case I’m calling my report “Medium Progress by Month”. Your report layout should now look something like this:

To finish, select “Create Report”.

Save Your Report to the Dashboard

Select your report, then drill down to Organics, then Month. Apply your market segment filter by selecting the “Advanced Segments” in the upper right corner. Checkmark the “York-Harrisburg-Lancaster-PA” segment to apply to your custom report. You can deselect “All Visits” to view only your new market segment. Now that you have it the way you want to view it, select “Add to Dashboard” and you’ll have an instant view of the organic results every time you log onto your Analytics account. Or, better yet, click on “Email” and schedule this report to arrive in your inbox on a daily, weekly or monthly interval. Quick and easy–nothing to it!
