I’ve always been fascinated by the way that the internet and computers in general work. But there is one thing about the web that keeps me coming back for more and that is the sheer quantity of choice that one can make online. I have used many methods that have shown me how to either create wealth online or lose it in a heartbeat. It’s not something that is cut out for everyone and it’s definitely not something that everyone should be running to do. Most of the time people are lying to you to make a quick buck and that more often than not is most annoying. Although the methods of making money online seem very simple, they are often very difficult to keep up with. You see, the internet changes everyday and that in itself can be frustrating.

I want to share a few methods of how I ‘made it’ online and hopefully this will inspire some of you to do the same.

Generate Income Online

The web is a giant place. There are billions of web pages and these are increasing everyday. Everyone wants a piece of online shares. So how to you keep abreast of the ‘heat’ if you decide to make money online. Well, you try finding your niche. There are hundreds of tools that will help you to find your niche and most of them come with a great big price to match their so called ‘expertise’. Mostly what I find is that these software programs just pull information from Search Engines like Google. So why not just go to the source? The key word tool on Google helps you to find out just how many searches are performed on keywords that you may be interested in. However bear in mind that sometimes these numbers are exaggerated. You can look for anything from keywords to key phrases to see just how these would word in any niche that you select. You can take these keywords and paste them into your blogs or your websites and start optimizing for those only. You will find that if your have great content you will also have an enormous amount of traffic passing through your site.

Marketing

I find online marketing to be a lot of fun mainly because of the ability to determine results down to the smallest factor. It takes a great deal of effort to set up, but once you have that put of the way you are pretty much set to analysing and processing all the information that you will need. You would find tons of guides online to help you determine which analytics service you should use. I personally recommend Google Analytics; however, there are many others to choose from.
I use blogging software namely WordPress as a CMS or a targeted blog to add that extra edge to my online efforts. Here are a few sites that I use to market my information:

You can choose as many as you like and even find more online that could help you to get a wider audience and maybe even an audience that is more targeted. Depending on your type of service and/or product you might choose to market only to a specific area and/or country. For this type of marketing I make use of the Google, MSN and Yahoo! Webmaster tools to ensure that all of my search results are targeted towards the place that it is intended for. This way you may even get better Search Engine Results Positioning and would ultimately help to increase your sales per visit.

Remember that your content and site should be optimized for your visitors and not the search engines. This can help you realize the potential of your site and ensure that you create a memorable presence online. Use of Keywords

At the heart of successful SEO is determining what keyword or keywords to use when optimizing a website. The prevalence of a specific word or phrase on a webpage is critical to influencing SERP (Search Engine Result pages) ranking. In most cases websites should be optimized for multiple keywords, and a simple way to do this is to optimize different sections or pages with different keywords.

Of course, there are exceptions to this approach.Below are some basic questions to ask when considering keywords to focus on. Once a keyword(s) is selected it should serve as the focus of a site’s SEO efforts.

1. Does anyone search for the word on search engines?

If the site is about an eating establishment, what words would people use to search for the site? Restaurant, café, diner… Does anyone use the word “eatery”?

2. Which words does the site’s target audience use?

Regional diction complicates keyword selection if a site is aimed at a large geographical area. For example, a housing site for the English-speaking world can use “apartment” and do well in the United States, but it wouldn’t do as well in other countries like the United Kingdom where “flat” is much more commonplace.

A different website may be marketing a medical drug made up of the exact same chemical. 3. How competitive is it to rank well with a specific keyword?

Ranking well on results pages for “restaurant” is very tough, since there are millions of sites for restaurants. While other words like “diner”, “café”, and “eatery” are still very common on websites, they are far less common than the word “restaurant.” It is therefore easier to influence the search engine rank of a restaurant website using these less-common words instead. Due to the difficulty of ranking high in search engine results for an extremely competitive keyword such as “restaurant”, SEO professionals will usually focus on more specific words or phrases. For instance, a local pizza restaurant does not want or need to appear in search engine results for everyone around the world who searches for the term “pizzeria”. If the local pizza restaurant is in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC, it would make a lot more sense to focus SEO efforts on phrases such as “Washington DC pizzeria” or “Georgetown pizzeria.”

4. How does one find out words that are commonly used by a specific audience?

There are several ways to answer this question. For highly specialized sites, the SEO professional’s clients are often the best resource since they will know best what words are used in their specialized field. One useful tool is Google Suggest. Google Suggest lists the number of results that the search engine presents for a specific keyword. This can be helpful in determining the relative popularity of different keywords one thinks the target audience may use to find one’s site. Other tools include keyword selector tools that will read the pages on a website and suggest keywords to the SEO professional based on their prevalence and the presence of synonyms on the site’s other pages.

I have had a lot of people ask me about the differences between Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing. There seems to be a lot of confusion between these terms in everyday use. However, their explanations are simple, to the point and concise which makes distinguishing between one and the other very easy.

Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site web presence.

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and HTML coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.

Search engine marketing, or SEM, is a form of Internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs) through the use of paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion. The industry peak body Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO), also includes search engine optimization (SEO) within its reporting, but SEO is a separate discipline with most sources, including the New York Times defining SEM as ‘the practice of buying paid search listings’.

So, Search Engine Optimization is about increasing visibility to search engines and to generate traffic from search results and to increase the positioning of a web site in search engines, whereas, Search Engine Marketing involves paid listings in Search Engines such as Google’s Adwords, to ensure that you will come across highly in search results. I believe that Search Engine Optimization is more powerful and will be much more long lasting in continuing to generate quality traffic to a web site as long as quality content is kept a constant. There is no need to use paid listings although, budget permitting, it can be rather useful.
